What happens to us as a child when our core emotional needs are not met?

November 20, 2023

All humans are born the same to have our emotional needs met. This is an evolutionary system in the brain set up for survival in a socially constructed world.

To feel safe

To feel understood and acknowledged

To feel accepted

To feel loved

To feel protected

If the parent is not able to provide for these needs the child feels unsafe and believes themselves as not good enough. The child learns that there is something in them that is not right and they need to change in order to be accepted and safe. This is evident in adulthood as fundamental core beliefs about ones self are essentially negative and can not be shifted.

Examples:

“I am not good enough”

“I cant cope”

“I am not worthy”

“I don’t deserve good things”
