What is Intergenerational trauma

November 20, 2023

The trauma we experience in childhood while in the care of our parents is greatly influenced by our parents past traumas. Psychologist began rot realise this when studying the devastating affects of trauma had on Jews after the war. It was noted that their children were showing signs of trauma as well, even though they were not exposed to the events themselves. Psychology Attachment Theory showed how parents own traumas lead to their children having signs of distress and difficulties in attaching to their parents at an early age. Children showed signs of emotional and behavioural disturbances.

This carried onto their adult lives and lead to many risks factors in their well-being. Reference for more information - Book: The Myth of Normal by Dr Gabor Mate
